I’m growing my family

Welcoming a new child to your family — through birth, surrogacy, or adoption — can be exciting and intense. This helpful checklist can help ease some of the stress.

Where are you on your journey?

Preparing for my new child(ren)

Find an in-network OB/GYN

Good prenatal care is one of the most important steps in having a healthy pregnancy and baby. Most first appointments happen between weeks six and eight of pregnancy. Use your carrier’s website or app to find an in-network OB/GYN who’s a good fit for you.

Save money by using pre-tax funds

Use your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Health Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay coinsurance and copays for prenatal care. You can increase your HSA contribution anytime in PlanSource to cover the extra expenses.

Plan your leave

You get four weeks of bonding leave OR 14 weeks of medical/disability leave if you’re the pregnant or birthing parent (medical certification required). If your state offers paid leave, file a claim there — IMI tops up your pay to 100%. Otherwise, Short-term Disability pays 60% for up to 13 weeks.

Sign up for free support

Anthem participants get pregnancy-to-postpartum support through Building Healthy Families on the Sydney℠ Health app.

Kaiser participants can get connected to resources, tools and support through the Pregnancy and Care Resource Guide.

Order your breast pump

Your IMI medical plan covers a free breast pump.

Welcoming my child(ren)

Start your leave

Let your supervisor, HR partner, and the leave team (leave@imiamericasinc.com) know you're going on leave. Try to give at least 30 days' notice before your leave begins and let them know when your leave officially starts.

Once you've met with the leave team and HR, file a claim with Lincoln Financial. If your state also offers a paid leave program, file there too. The leave team takes care of your timecard while you're out.

Include your HR partner on all communications related to your leave, so they can stay in the loop.

Add your child(ren) to your benefits

If you want to add your child(ren) to your IMI benefits, including medical coverage, you have 30 days from their birth or adoption date to make the change in PlanSource. Coverage starts on the birth date or adoption placement date. You’ll need to submit documentation — like a birth certificate or adoption paperwork — within 30 days. If you run into any issues getting the birth certificate within this window, please reach out to the benefits team at benefits@imiamericasinc.com for assistance.

Update your life insurance and will

Now that your family is growing, you may want to consider your life insurance needs and make updates through PlanSource. It’s also a good time to create or update your will. If you are enrolled in the Legal benefit through MetLife, you can receive will preparation support at no cost to you.

Find an in-network pediatrician

Choose a pediatrician for your new child(ren) by their birth or adoption date. Search your carrier’s website or app for in-network providers. Remember, in-network well-child visits and immunizations are covered at no cost to you.

Sign up for free support

Anthem participants get postpartum and newborn care support, plus parenting guidance, through the Building Healthy Families resources on the Sydney℠ Health app.

Adjusting to parenthood

Plan your return to work

Two weeks before your return-to-work date, the leave team will confirm your transition plan or arrange for an extension, if you need one. If you have questions about your leave or returning to work, contact the leave team (leave@imiamericasinc.com), your HR partner, or your supervisor.
