Supplemental Insurance

New for 2027: Supplemental coverage will be administered by Guardian.

Supplement your medical coverage with critical illness, accident, and hospital indemnity insurance. These plans pay a cash benefit you can use however you’d like, and you can take this coverage with you if you leave IMI.

Critical Illness Insurance

How it works

If you experience a covered condition, critical illness insurance pays a lump cash benefit to use however you need — to cover your medical plan deductible, everyday living expenses, or anything at all. Coverage is available for you, your spouse, and your dependent children through Transamerica.

What's covered

Coverage includes a broad range of serious conditions, including cancer, heart attack, stroke, end-stage renal failure, and more.

What it pays

The amount you’ll receive depends on the specific option you enroll in and the specific illness you experience.

Paycheck costs

Your paycheck costs are based on your age and the benefit amount you elect. The higher the benefit amount, the higher your rate. You can see specific amounts when you enroll.

How it can help

Here’s an example of how it works in real life:

  • You elect $20,000 in critical illness coverage.
  • You experience chest pains and numbness in your left arm.
  • You visit the emergency room and are diagnosed with a heart attack.
  • Transamerica pays you a $20,000 cash benefit.
  • You use the money to pay your medical plan deductible and other expenses like pet care while you’re in the hospital. (You can use the money for anything you’d like.)

Accident Insurance

How it works

If you’re injured in an accident, this insurance pays a lump sum cash benefit to use however you need — to cover your medical plan deductible, everyday living expenses, or anything at all. Coverage is available for you, your spouse, and your dependent children through Transamerica.

What's covered

Benefits cover a broad range of accidental injuries, including injuries from falls, car accidents, sports-related accidents, and more.

What it pays

The amount you receive depends on the plan option you select, and the type of injury and treatment. Benefits are paid directly to you based on a schedule of covered injuries and treatments.

Paycheck costs

Paycheck costs are based on the coverage level and the number of family members you cover. You can see the specific rates when you enroll.

How it can help

Here’s an example of how it works in real life:

  • You’re in a car accident and have pain in your arm.
  • You visit the emergency room, get X-rays, and are diagnosed with a fractured humerus.
  • Transamerica pays you a $3,750 cash benefit (based on the option you selected and the payment schedule).
  • You use the money to pay your medical plan deductible and other expenses like child care and housecleaning, since you may need extra help while your arm heals. (You can use the money for anything you’d like.)

Hospital Indemnity Insurance

How it works

If you’re hospitalized for a covered injury, sickness, or pregnancy, this insurance pays a lump sum cash benefit to use however you need — to cover your medical plan deductible, everyday living expenses, or anything at all. Coverage is available for you, your spouse, and your dependent children through Transamerica.

What's covered

This insurance provides coverage if you’re confined in a hospital for an eligible injury or sickness. Hospitalization for pregnancy is covered for employees and spouses (not for dependent children).

What it pays

Coverage pays a daily benefit for each day you’re in the hospital. The amount of the daily benefit depends on the coverage option you choose.

Paycheck costs

Your paycheck costs vary based on the plan option you select and the number of family members you cover. You can see your specific rates when you enroll.

How it can help

Here’s an example of how it works in real life:

  • You have a high fever, so your doctor sends you to the emergency room.
  • The emergency room physician admits you to the hospital for two days.
  • Transamerica pays you a $1,200 cash benefit.
  • You use the money to pay your medical plan deductible. (You can use the money for anything you’d like.)

All three plans are portable. That means you can convert your coverage to an individual policy and take it with you if you leave IMI.
